It turns out that if you’re a backpacker and you’ve made it as far as Oaxaca, you’re likely well-acquainted with the transport in Mexico.

From this point, you can make sure you have covered all the bases before you start making travel plans and booking accommodation, etc.

So, maybe you’re asking questions like can it be done in one day, what else is there to do in Puerto Escondido and how much will it all cost.

As long as you’re confident you have already done all the things to do in Oaxaca then you are ready to explore this lively coastal town.

Let’s take a quick look at the map to see how this journey looks:

The bus takes around 10 hours (as advertised) on the Ado website.

Bear in mind, that this can change unexpectedly due to road stops known as retenes in Spanish and other unforeseen circumstances.

Give yourself plenty of time in advance! For example, on this journey, try to take the earliest bus you possibly can.

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Ticket Advice

There are 3 main ways you can get to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca as a backpacker or traveler using public transport.

  • ADO Bus
  • Camionetas (Transportes Villa del Pacifico)
  • A Small Plane

Depending on your budget taking a small plane would be the fastest option, however, I recommend using Ado for bus travel in Mexico.

Ado is very punctual, comfortable and usually makes at least one stop during long-distance journies so you can get off to stretch your legs.

The Camionetas also will make a stop during this trip and as they are advertised to take less time you may decide to opt for this method.

Bear in mind though, like with most long-distance along the gringo trail, you’ll sacrifice your own comfort for those few hours difference.

If vehicles are delayed on the road, you will more than likely not save any time by taking the Camioneta, so it is a time-risk that you run here.

Also note the Camionetas leave every hour starting at 3:30 am right up until 9:30 pm then the last one leaves at 11:30 pm

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Travel Advice

Having said all that there should be no complications on the road.

One way you can reduce the risk is by looking for any religious ceremonies happening, for example, Semana Santa.

You can check with one of the hostels in Puerto Escondido or the bus companies to find out this information before you book your ticket.

In many cases, when doing long haul travel, I find getting the night bus more efficient and it can also save me money on accommodation.

Not to mention, I don’t’ feel like I’m in a rush to get there. I can get comfortable and also sleep during the journey.

Here are some crucial things you’ll need to know:

  • The Ado buses are more comfortabel
  • You’ll find the Camioneta have no toilet on board
  • The camioneta will take you approximately 6-7 hours depending on traffic.

Not so important but useful things to know:

  • The Camioneta can get full and stuffy very quick
  • Keep your luggage in your sight at all times
  • You’ll find that both buses will make stops along the way
  • The bus will take many twists and turns along the way

I understand that some people are very sensitive when it comes to long-distance travel in Mexico and can experience motion sickness.

You can purchase either a Dramamine or Gravol pill from any pharmacy which will help combat motion sickness.

I had to learn the hard way numerous times on these types of trips, so make sure you take one around one hour before you travel.
